In a bid to boost its international air links, Sardinia’s regional government has launched an ambitious plan to subsidise flights from its three main airports – Alghero, Cagliari and Olbia – to 67 European destinations, including Zagreb and Dubrovnik.
Four low-cost carriers – easyJet, Volotea, Wizz Air, and Aeroitalia – have already expressed interest ahead of the 22 August deadline, though proposed routes remain under wraps.
Up to 50% of airport fees on both ends could be covered, part of a strategy to enhance tourism and regional development.
Currently, there are no direct flights between Sardinia and Croatia. Ryanair dominates the Italy–Croatia corridor with nearly half of all summer flights, followed by easyJet and Vueling.
Zagreb and Zadar lead in connectivity to Italy, but Sardinia has remained out of reach—except from Belgrade, where Air Serbia recently launched seasonal flights to Alghero.
With Cagliari targeted for Croatian routes, and Ryanair already operating a base there, a new Adriatic connection may just be a boarding pass away.
