Zijin Takes Falkensteiner Belgrade

A surprising twist in Serbia’s hospitality scene as a major player in copper and gold mining expands into luxury real estate

In a move that blends industry with indulgence, Serbia Zijin Mining, a subsidiary of China’s Zijin Mining Group, has acquired full ownership of Belgrade’s Alba Invest doo — the company behind the sleek, modern Falkensteiner Hotel in New Belgrade.

The deal, now officially registered with Serbia’s business registry (APR), sees Zijin take the reins from previous owner MF Development B.V., a Dutch firm based in Rotterdam.

Opened in 2012 and designed by world-renowned architect Boris Podrecca, the Falkensteiner stands as a four-star superior property and a striking fixture of the capital’s hospitality landscape.

The acquisition signals an intriguing shift for Zijin, whose core operations are rooted in copper and gold extraction in eastern Serbia, rather than high-end hospitality.

What lies ahead for the hotel under its new ownership remains to be seen — but the move speaks volumes about Zijin’s deepening footprint in Serbia’s economic life, far beyond the mines.
