Zagreb’s Free Sljeme Cable Car Scheme Boosts Usage and Cuts Car Traffic

The City of Zagreb’s decision to offer free rides on the Sljeme Cable Car for all residents has been hailed as a major success, with usage surging and environmental benefits becoming clear.

Since the City Council introduced the scheme on 4th May, the number of tickets issued has increased nearly two and a half times compared to the same period in 2023, with two-thirds of the users being local residents

The scheme has also had a positive impact on traffic, as the number of private cars driving to Sljeme has significantly decreased.

This initiative not only encourages residents to embrace more sustainable transport but has also proven popular with the public, underlining the benefits of free public services in reducing environmental impact and promoting local tourism.
