Ursula von der Leyen has been re-elected for a second five-year term as President of the European Commission, reaffirming her leadership at the helm of the EU’s executive branch

The European Parliament, consisting of 720 members, granted von der Leyen’s nomination with 401 votes in favor, 284 against, and 15 abstentions. The threshold for her reappointment was 361 votes, a margin she comfortably surpassed.

Von der Leyen, the first woman to lead the European Commission, has made clear that EU enlargement will be a cornerstone of her agenda

“The accession process will be based on merit,” she emphasized, signaling a robust commitment to expanding the union while maintaining rigorous standards.

Her re-election promises to bring continuity and a renewed vigor to the Commission’s efforts, navigating the complexities of an evolving European landscape. As von der Leyen prepares to tackle the challenges ahead, her vision for a broader, more integrated EU sets a bold course for the future.
