The 500-Year-Old Easter Tradition Still Alive on Hvar

A silent pilgrimage of endurance, faith, and song—under the stars of Dalmatia

Every Holy Thursday, as dusk cloaks the Croatian island of Hvar, a centuries-old ritual awakens.

For nearly 500 years, the Za Križen procession has united six villages—Jelsa, Vrboska, Pitve, Vrisnik, Svirče, and Vrbanj—in a moving nocturnal pilgrimage across 25 kilometres of rugged terrain.

Led by barefoot or sock-clad cross-bearers shouldering 18-kilogram wooden crosses, each group sets off simultaneously, moving in opposite circular routes, never meeting—only passing in sacred rhythm.

The cross, never allowed to touch the ground, becomes a symbol of both suffering and connection, its weight matched by the spiritual strength of its bearer.

By dawn on Good Friday, after eight hours of hymns and silence under moonlight, villagers gather outside their churches, welcoming back the weary, uplifted procession with emotion and song.

A final tradition—a humble plate of dried cod shared with the cross-bearer—closes the night.

Now protected by UNESCO, Za Križen is more than ritual. It is a living testament to resilience, community, and faith.
