How a Railway Overhaul Could Turn Koprivnica into Zagreb’s Next Suburb

A one-hour train ride could redraw Croatia’s commuter map — and its economic future

Koprivnica and Križevci may soon feel like leafy extensions of Zagreb, thanks to a €1.5bn modernisation of Croatia’s railways.

By mid-2026, journeys from Koprivnica to the capital will be cut to just 60 minutes, slashing current travel times that can stretch to two hours.

New low-floor electric trains — with bike and pet carriages — will run 26 times a day, making rail not just faster but more appealing than city buses.

The upgrade is part of a national push: 66 modern trains are already in service, with more hybrid and battery-powered models on the way, including links from Zagreb to Split.

For Križevci, the project brings more than speed — a future intermodal terminal and industrial rail link promise to energise the local economy.

With improved connections to Varaždin and Čakovec, the changes could reshape daily migration patterns and inject fresh life into the Koprivnica-Križevci County economy.
