Fading Dreams of Germany as Foreign Labor Trends Shift in Bosnia and Herzegovina

As economic pressures mount, fewer Bosnian citizens seek work in Germany, while demand for foreign labor within the country rises

The number of Bosnian citizens seeking employment in Germany has notably declined, a trend highlighted by the latest report from Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Employment Agency.

While the annual quota for foreign workers in BiH has seen a significant increase for 2025—rising by 19%—the situation is starkly different for those heading abroad.

In 2024, the number of Bosnian workers placed in Germany was substantially lower, driven by rising costs, particularly in housing and inflation.

Meanwhile, Slovenia remains a top destination for Bosnian workers, with nearly 5,500 contracts signed in 2024, maintaining steady demand in sectors like construction and transportation.

With the focus shifting to managing the domestic labor surplus, authorities aim to ensure that migration remains regulated, though the allure of Western Europe wanes under economic strain.

This drop contrasts with the growing influx of foreign workers to Bosnia, with the majority arriving from Turkey, Nepal, and India.
