EU Workers Average 36-Hour Work Week, Greeks Work the Longest

Employees in the European Union worked an average of 36.1 hours per week in 2023

According to Eurostat, the statistical agency, there were significant variations across EU countries. Greece recorded the longest work week at 39.8 hours, followed by Romania (39.5), Poland (39.3), and Bulgaria (39). In contrast, the Netherlands had the shortest work week at 32.2 hours, with Austria (33.6) and Germany (34) following closely.

Industries with the longest work weeks included agriculture, forestry, and fishing (41.5 hours), mining and quarrying (39.1), and construction (38.9). Meanwhile, the shortest work weeks were in household activities as employers (26.7 hours), education (31.9), and arts, entertainment, and recreation (33).
