Ahold Delhaize Sells 87 Stores in Romania

Local player Annabella emerges stronger as regional retail consolidates

In one of Romania’s largest retail transactions in recent years, Ahold Delhaize has sold 87 supermarkets to local chain Annabella. For Annabella, the acquisition is a major leap forward; for Ahold Delhaize, it’s a retreat to markets where its dominance is secure.

The deal reflects a deeper shift across the region: the rise of homegrown champions capable of standing toe-to-toe with multinational retail giants.

Romania’s retail sector, long shaped by foreign capital, now shows that domestic players can scale rapidly and capture consumer loyalty.

As consolidation gathers pace, the Romanian market could serve as a model for neighbouring countries, where local retailers may increasingly reclaim space in a landscape once defined by global brands.
