Romania and Bulgaria Join EU’s Schengen Area for Land Borders

Schengen area expands to include Romania and Bulgaria for land travel

Romania and Bulgaria have officially become full members of the European Union’s Schengen Area, gaining entry for land border travel. This milestone builds on their inclusion in the Schengen Zone for air and sea borders since March 2004.

The decision comes after years of opposition from Austria, which had expressed concerns over illegal migration. Vienna had previously supported limited access to the Schengen Zone for air travel, citing stricter security protocols at airports.

However, a shift in Austria’s position led to the final lifting of its veto in November, paving the way for Romania and Bulgaria’s complete integration into the border-free travel zone.

This expansion marks a significant step for both countries, enhancing regional connectivity and solidifying their integration into the European Union.
