Aleksandar Vučić has announced that early parliamentary elections will be held in 2026, stating that the timing will depend on the completion of key state tasks and reforms. Speaking to the media, Vučić said the decision is driven by political responsibility rather than pressure, adding that citizens will ultimately decide on the country’s direction.
Originally scheduled for 2027, the parliamentary elections have been brought forward amid growing public dissatisfaction.
Months of student-led protests, university blockades and strikes have intensified pressure on the authorities, with early elections emerging as one of the students’ key demands.
Against this backdrop, the decision to hold elections in 2026 is widely seen as a response to sustained civic pressure and broader calls for political accountability, rather than a routine electoral adjustment.
