University of Belgrade Among Top 500 Global Institutions on Prestigious Shanghai Rankings

The University of Belgrade (UB) has once again secured its place among the world's top 500 universities, according to the highly esteemed Shanghai Rankings

Positioned between 401st and 500th place, UB has emerged as a leading academic institution in a field of over 2,500 universities worldwide.

The university’s rector, Vladan Đokić, congratulated the faculty, researchers, and staff, highlighting that this marks the third consecutive year UB has maintained its position within the top 500—a testament to the institution’s consistent excellence on the global stage.

“Our sustained presence among the world’s best is a reflection of the outstanding individual achievements of our professors and researchers, as well as our active participation in international projects and the growing interest from foreign students,” Đokić stated.

He emphasized that the university’s ranking on global lists is closely linked to systemic and financial investments in science and education, underscoring the importance of continued support in these areas.

The 2024 Shanghai Rankings, published today, are regarded as one of the most prestigious academic rankings globally. Since 2003, these rankings have highlighted the world’s best universities based on a transparent methodology and objective third-party data. This year, over 2,500 institutions were assessed, with the top 1,000 universities making the final list.

At the pinnacle of the rankings, Harvard University has held the top spot for 22 consecutive years, followed by Stanford and MIT. The rest of the top 10 includes Cambridge (4th), Berkeley (5th), Oxford (6th), Princeton (7th), Caltech (8th), Columbia (8th), and Chicago (10th).

In continental Europe, the University of Paris-Saclay (12th) advanced three positions, remaining the highest-ranked institution, closely followed by ETH Zurich (21st).

The University of Belgrade also achieved notable rankings in several specialized fields. It is ranked among the top 40 globally in Textile Engineering, within the top 75 in Food Science and Technology, and highly placed in Clinical Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, and Physics—all within the top 300 worldwide.

A new list focusing on academic fields will be released in October, where UB is expected to continue its strong performance.

The University of Belgrade’s consistent success in these rankings not only highlights its academic prowess but also underscores its growing influence on the global stage, reinforcing its position as a beacon of higher education in the Balkans.
