Serbia Secures €150m EIB Loan to Upgrade 540 km of Roads

Investment targets road safety, climate resilience and faster regional connectivity.

Serbia will upgrade around 540 kilometres of national and local roads under a €150 million loan from European Investment Bank (EIB Global), aimed at improving road safety, climate resilience and overall network reliability. The project supports faster travel, reduced environmental impact and stronger links between regions and EU transport corridors.

The investment will modernise key road sections to EU standards, improving passenger and freight movement and supporting sustainable economic growth.

According to Damien Sorrell, Head of the EIB Regional Hub for the Western Balkans, the project removes transport bottlenecks and strengthens Serbia’s integration into regional and European networks.

The loan is complemented by a €1.4 million grant under the EIB Economic Resilience Initiative, alongside EU technical assistance. Additional measures include safer pedestrian crossings, school-zone protections, new sidewalks and cycling lanes. The project builds on earlier EIB-financed road rehabilitation efforts that have already modernised more than 900 km of Serbia’s roads.
