Serbia Goes Green at Osaka Expo

A living skin and a playground of ideas — Serbia redefines sustainability with a bold architectural statement in the heart of Japan

In a confident display of creative innovation and ecological ambition, Serbia has opened its national pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka, becoming the only Western Balkan country with an independent presence at the global showcase.

Titled Society of Play, the pavilion merges architectural imagination with green consciousness — boasting Expo’s only vertical living garden and a structure made from 95% recyclable materials.

General Commissioner Žarko Malinović described the pavilion as a symbolic bridge between Osaka and Belgrade, ahead of Serbia hosting Expo 2027.

Architect Jakša Nikodijević said the design, inspired by Belgrade’s Great War Island, fuses urban ecology with spaces inviting play and community.

Beyond its striking form, the 930m² pavilion positions Serbia as a forward-thinking business hub.

Through curated exhibitions and economic weeks, it will spotlight local companies ready for global markets — all while embracing the Expo theme: Designing Future Society for Our Lives.
