Reconstruction Begins on Montenegro’s Đurđevića Tara Bridge

China-backed overhaul promises new life for a symbol of engineering and adventure tourism.

One of Montenegro’s most iconic landmarks—the Đurđevića Tara Bridge—is set to undergo a major reconstruction, with work now officially underway.

Tucked high above the Tara River Canyon, the bridge is not only an architectural marvel from the 1940s but also a magnet for tourists drawn to its dramatic vistas and the roaring rapids below.

Thanks to a ¥51.8 million (approx. €6.64 million) donation from China, the eight-month restoration—led by a Chinese firm with local partners—aims to restore the bridge’s authentic look while extending its lifespan.

Crucially, the project has been designed to minimise disruptions: rafting will continue unimpeded, and traffic will remain partially open, with limited closures timed to avoid peak tourist season.

The plan includes upgrading 250 metres of access roads on both sides and a new parking area, all while preserving the bridge’s protected status.

Officials promise that by next year, visitors will experience the Đurđevića Tara in all its renewed glory—stronger, safer, and more breathtaking than ever.
