ÖBB Rail Cargo Group Launches New Direct Rail Connection Between Serbia and Croatia

Company is expanding its network with a new direct connection between Serbia and Croatia

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is enhancing its TransNET network with a new direct rail link between Serbia and Croatia, marking a significant advancement in rail freight logistics for the region.

This strategic connection aims to unite two key rail freight hubs, thereby optimising logistics operations between the two nations.

The establishment of a carrier company in Belgrade in 2023 paved the way for the recent creation of a rail freight forwarding company in partnership with Transfera d.o.o., a prominent freight forwarding firm in the Western Balkans.

By combining RCG’s extensive expertise in rail transport with Transfera’s nuanced understanding of the market, the two companies are poised to deliver bespoke logistics solutions tailored to the Serbian market’s unique demands. This includes innovative routes like the recent TransFER from Krusevac to Budapest and Duisburg, as well as the latest TransFER from Belgrade to Rijeka.

The new TransFER service connects the Nelt container terminal, strategically located near Belgrade and vital industrial centres, with the Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT) in Rijeka, Croatia’s largest port

This terminal is crucial for the flow of goods, handling approximately 70% of all cargo moving to and from Serbia. By establishing this direct rail connection, RCG is solidifying Rijeka’s role as a central transshipment hub for Serbian commerce, allowing for greater efficiency in rail freight transport and reduced transit times.

This initiative not only enhances the logistical framework for customers but also opens new avenues for economic growth within the region, facilitating more streamlined logistics processes and capitalising on emerging opportunities in the vibrant marketplace.
