North Macedonia Backs Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara

Skopje strengthens diplomatic alignment with Rabat, endorses framework as ‘serious and credible’

North Macedonia has officially expressed support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan regarding Western Sahara. The statement, issued on 21 July 2025, affirmed that Skopje views Morocco’s proposal—originally submitted to the UN in 2007—as “a serious and credible effort” to resolve the long-standing territorial dispute.

The Moroccan Foreign Ministry welcomed the gesture as “a reaffirmation of strong bilateral ties” and noted that both countries aim to expand cooperation in education, economic development, and multilateral diplomacy.

This development places North Macedonia among a rising number of European and Balkan states recognizing Rabat’s framework as a pragmatic solution to one of North Africa’s most complex conflicts.

The support comes at a time when North Macedonia is positioning itself more assertively in international affairs and underscores its alignment with Western partners on global security and diplomatic issues.
