Energy Community Marks 20 Years in Vienna

Ministers and EU officials reflect on two decades of energy integration across Southeast Europe

The Energy Community, headquartered in Vienna, marked its 20th anniversary this July with a ministerial meeting in Athens—the city where the treaty was first signed in 2005. Since then, it has grown into a key platform aligning the energy policies of nine non-EU countries with EU rules, covering everything from market liberalisation to decarbonisation.

The gathering brought together energy ministers, EU Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, and Energy Community Director Artur Lorkowski. Discussions focused on strengthening cross-border electricity trade, accelerating market coupling with the EU, and ensuring fair application of upcoming carbon regulations. Serbia’s planned electricity market integration with Hungary in 2026 was noted as a regional milestone.

With its Secretariat based in Vienna, the Energy Community has become a cornerstone for regional energy reform—pushing forward legal harmonisation, infrastructure coordination, and the energy transition in the Western Balkans and beyond.
