Nova Gorica has unveiled its long-awaited open-air amphitheatre, adding a striking new chapter to the city’s cultural landscape just in time for its role as European Capital of Culture.
Nestled beside the landmark theatre—postmodernist architect Vojteh Ravnikar’s (1943–2010) crowning work—the 500-seat venue realises plans first sketched out in the early 1990s.
At its grand opening on 16 June, Slovenia’s culture minister Asta Vrečko hailed the space as a vital addition for the city and its community, promising it will outlast the Capital of Culture celebrations.
Theatre director Mirjam Drnovšček called it “a place to unite people, languages, stories and hearts.”
With adaptable seating, dressing rooms, and a dedicated control space, the €6 million amphitheatre stands ready for plays, concerts and cinema, with a roof set to complete the vision by year’s end.
