The EU and EBRD have launched SME Go Green in Montenegro, aiming to accelerate the country’s transition to a greener economy.
Under the programme, local SMEs will gain access to dedicated credit lines via CKB and NLB Banka Podgorica, paired with EU-funded grants covering up to 15% of investments in renewable energy and agrobusiness.
Backed by €145 million regionally, the initiative offers not just financing but vital technical support to help small enterprises invest wisely and sustainably.
A special focus is placed on women-led businesses and green innovation across agri-value chains.
Remon Zakaria from the EBRD said that it was about productivity, competitiveness, and reducing carbon footprints.
EU delegate Yngve Engstrom added that MSMEs were the heartbeat of change and expressed pride in supporting them.
Already active in other Western Balkan countries, SME Go Green is set to scale, with €400 million projected in future rounds.
Since 2006, EBRD has invested €943 million in Montenegro. With this programme, the future looks both green and inclusive.
