Green Agenda Drives Change in Balkans

Two major projects, ADAPT 2.0 and Greening the Western Balkans, are poised to accelerate environmental restoration and climate resilience across the region, with backing from IUCN and international partners

The Western Balkans stands at a crossroads, where environmental challenges threaten both its natural heritage and future prosperity.

However, a fresh wave of international funding is set to reshape the region’s ecological destiny.

Spearheaded by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), two ambitious projects—ADAPT 2.0 and Greening the Western Balkans—aim to drive the implementation of the Green Agenda.

This landmark initiative aligns the region with the European Green Deal and the 2030 Biodiversity Strategy, which aims to protect 30% of land and marine ecosystems.

By strengthening regional cooperation and empowering local governments, these projects will foster nature-based solutions to climate change, boost biodiversity protection, and improve socio-economic resilience.

The stakes couldn’t be higher: this initiative could set the pace for sustainable development in one of Europe’s most vulnerable regions.
