Google Will Use Nuclear Reactors to Power AI Data Centers

Google has signed an agreement to use small nuclear reactors to generate the vast amounts of energy needed to power its artificial intelligence (AI) data centers

The tech giant has ordered seven small nuclear reactors from the California-based energy company “Kairos Power.” The first is expected to be operational in about six years, with the remaining reactors in use by 2035.

Tech companies are increasingly turning to nuclear energy sources to supply electricity for the massive data centers that run AI.

“The network needs new sources of electricity to support AI technologies. This agreement helps accelerate new technology and unlock the full potential of AI,” said Michael Terrell, Senior Director of Energy at Google.

The plans still need approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, as well as local agencies, before work on these projects can proceed.
