Milanović: The Future Of Greenland Can Only Be Decided By Its People

Croatian President stresses self-determination and dialogue amid rising tensions over Greenland’s status

Zoran Milanović has issued a statement on the ongoing political and military controversy surrounding Greenland, underscoring that decisions about the territory’s future belong exclusively to its people under the right to self-determination granted by Danish law. He emphasized that no security concern can override this fundamental right and that current tensions should be resolved through dialogue and cooperation between Denmark, Greenland, the United States, and within NATO, where all parties are equal members.

Milanović noted that security issues are separate from Greenland’s legal status and pointed to the Cold War example when the United States protected NATO’s security in Greenland through agreement with Danish authorities. He argued that any acceptable solution must respect the will of the Greenlandic people.

The Croatian government also responded to recent U.S. threats of tariffs over support for Denmark’s sovereignty, calling for a united European stance and reaffirming respect for Denmark’s territorial integrity and NATO allies.
