Šibenik Celebrates Basketball Legend Dražen Petrović on His 60th Birthday

The Croatian city of Šibenik is commemorating what would have been the 60th birthday of one of the greatest basketball players in history, Dražen Petrović

Born on 22 October 1964, Petrović’s career was tragically cut short at just 28 years old when he died in a car accident in Germany in 1993, shortly after returning from representing Croatia in Poland.

Main event took place at the Dražen Petrović monument in Baldekin, where delegations from the City of Šibenik, Šibenik-Knin County, local sports clubs, and various associations layed wreaths and light candles in his honor.

The commemorations include a special program led by students from Juraj Šižgorić Primary School, followed by a tribute at Dražen’s beloved basketball hoop on Petra Preradovića Street, where fans can pay their respects to the player who transformed Croatian and international basketball.

As part of the festivities, the 23rd Dražen Petrović Cup, an international basketball tournament for young players, was held at the Baldekin Sports Hall. Organized by OKK Dražen Petrović, the tournament is an annual event that honors the memory of Šibenik’s beloved sports hero by inspiring the next generation of basketball talent.

Even decades after his passing, Dražen Petrović remains a beacon of excellence and determination in the basketball world, his legacy immortalized in Šibenik and beyond. Today’s celebrations not only honor his life but remind us of the enduring impact of his achievements on both Croatian and global basketball.
